Blurt: Summertime Fun in the Sun Safety
It’s summertime which means fun in the sun! With the Fourth of July celebration rapidly approaching it is time to discuss some safety tips. This summer we will all be spending some time out in the sun and enjoying many activities. From merely taking a walk to swimming, surfing, cooking out, fishing, boating, water skiing, rafting, canoeing, traveling, camping, and enjoying the ball game we will all be outside this summer. Below I have listed some safety tips to consider while you are having fun in the sun.
Heat Exhaustion and Heat Stroke are serious conditions that must be considered.
- Stay hydrated. Drink Water/Fluids. Avoid caffeine, alcohol and drinks with sugar.
- Never leave a child in or let them play in a hot car.
- Limit time in the sun and take breaks.
- Do activities in the sun in the morning and early evening when the sun is not as strong.
- Watch for symptoms like thirst, dry mouth, vomiting, nausea, headaches, cramps, dizziness, and clammy or flushed skin. If someone has a high temperature hospitalization may be necessary.
Other Summer Tips for keeping it Safe this summer.
- Use sunscreen and/or sunblock. Apply repeatedly and after swimming.
- Wear sunglasses.
- Wear loose fitting and light color clothing.
- Avoid metal playground equipment.
- Use an insect repellent.
- Wear safety equipment for bicycling, skating and skateboarding.

- Keep Food at the right temperature to avoid food borne illnesses.
- Follow all Pool/Swimming Safety Rules. Never swim alone. Do not leave children unattended.
- Have personal floatation devices for every person when boating.
- Use care when mowing the lawn.
- Wear gloves when gardening.
