Blurt: Is There a Healthy Fried Clam Recipe?

file000356349910morguefile.jpg

Yes, here it is, if you don’t fry it. One of my favorite meals as a kid growing up was fried clams. The only problem is they are fried. Fried clams are not on my plan for living a healthier lifestyle. I am trying to eat a healthier diet and in doing so I stay away from fried foods most of the time. But, I still like the taste of fried foods so anytime I can get the taste without frying I go for it. Below I offer an excellent recipe for fried clams without all the grease and fat.

Ingredients:

  • 20 oz             Whole Baby Clams, fresh or canned, drained and patted dry
  • 1/4 cup           All-Purpose Flour
  • 1 Tbsp             Garlic Salt
  • 2 tsp               Black Pepper
  • 1 tsp                Red Pepper
  • 1 Tbsp             Oregano
  • 1 Tbsp             Corn Starch

Directions:

Preheat oven to 375°F. Spray large baking sheet with cooking spray. In a large bowl mix together flour, garlic salt, black and red pepper, oregano, and corn starch. Toss in the clams and coat them well until they break into delectable bite sized morsels of goodness. Place them on the baking sheet and lightly spray with the cooking spray. Bake them for about 40-45 minutes or until they are golden brown. This recipe will yield about 4-6 servings.

Serving Suggestions:

  • Serve with cocktail sauce.
  • Serve with sliced lemon wedges and squeeze juice over clams.
  • To spice things up serve with salsa instead of cocktail sauce.
  • Season with your favorite seasonings right out of the oven while still hot.
  • This recipe goes well with my homemade baked potato chips that can be found in my article, Blurt: It’s Snackin’ Time. They can be cooked in the same oven on a separate baking sheet, however they take less time.
  • This coating can also be used for shrimp; you could substitute the shrimp for the clams or mix the two.

Hope you enjoy it! We can live a happier and healthier lifestyle! Take Care and God Bless.

Looks good, but can you use oysters instead? I may not be able to get my hands on the clams,so it’s either oysters or shrimp. :-)

Yes, you can substitute oysters, shrimp, scallops, crab, craw fish, or any other shell fish for the clams. It makes a good coating for most anything. I haven’t tried it on chicken but I imagine it would be good for that as well. I love oysters though usually eat them raw straight from the shell. When I was living in Florida we use to get oysters by the sack full and sit on the sea wall and shuck them. That was some good eatin’. Yummmmeeyyyyy!

    Take care,

    Brian, the old man
